3 Communication Skills to Strengthen Your Relationship

Building a Bridge of Words

In the hustle of daily life, it’s easy for communication between partners to become purely transactional—discussing schedules, chores, and who’s picking up the kids. But strong relationships are built on a foundation of deeper, more meaningful connection. Re-learning how to truly talk and listen to one another can transform a partnership from surviving to thriving.

1. Practice Reflective Listening

Reflective listening is about more than just hearing words; it’s about understanding the emotion and meaning behind them. When your partner is speaking, try to listen without planning your response. Then, reflect back what you heard in your own words: “It sounds like you felt really overwhelmed today when…” This simple act validates their feelings and ensures you’ve truly understood them before reacting.

2. Use "I" Statements

When conflict arises, it’s easy to start sentences with "You..." ("You always forget," "You never listen"). This often puts the other person on the defensive. Instead, frame your concerns from your own perspective using "I" statements. For example, "I feel unheard when the TV is on while we’re talking" is much more effective than "You never pay attention to me." It expresses your feelings without placing blame, opening the door for a more constructive conversation.

3. Schedule a Weekly "Check-In"

Set aside 15-20 minutes each week for a dedicated check-in. This isn’t the time to solve problems, but to connect. Ask open-ended questions like, "What was a high point and a low point of your week?" or "Is there anything you need from me right now?" This creates a ritual of connection and ensures that small issues don’t build up into major resentments over time.

By integrating these skills into your daily interactions, you can build a more resilient, understanding, and intimate partnership. If you find yourselves stuck, couples counseling can provide a supportive space to practice these tools and navigate deeper issues.
